Using technology in the classroom can do a great deal to engage students and allow them to create and explore in ways that isn't possible with traditional teaching practices.  With the increased use of technology in the classroom teachers need to take some time to think about how their current classroom procedures or policies need to be changed to allow for the use of more technology in the classroom.

One change I have had to make to my classroom procedures is allowing students to bring their own devices to class to use to complete their daily work.  As teachers we like to be in control of our classroom environment.  This control allows teachers to minimize distractions, complete lessons, and keep track of behavior issues.  At first look allowing students to bring their devices to class might seem like an invitation for teachers to give up some of their control. However, it should be looked at as an invitation to enhance student learning.  Allowing students to use their devices in class lets them connect to the world far beyond the classroom walls.  Students can access information and show their mastery of content creatively by using devices and technology they already own, and know how to use.

When teachers begin implementing bring your own device in their classrooms, like any new initiative teachers try, they will encounter problems from time to time. However, if teachers take the time to set expectations and practice procedures for use, than students using their own device to complete work in the classroom will be another avenue teachers can use to reach today’s learners.
